Saving the Net Through Neutrality

The CRTC will hold hearings into the traffic management policies of Canada’s major ISPs in July 2009. The concept of net neutrality is based on the idea that access to content published on the internet should be free and unfettered. ISPs should not have the ability to shape traffic, limit access to sites and/or services, or limit how users receive data over subscriber networks.

It's interesting to note that telecom companies that wish to partake in the $7.2 billion in economic stimulus funds that President Obama has earmarked for connecting rural America to fast and affordable internet access must adhere to the principles of net neutrality. There has been little public debate in Canada.

If you care about keeping the internet free from traffic shaping policies there's still time to submit an official response to the CRTC. Since these hearings will ultimately determine the fate of net neutrality in Canada, it’s important to have your voice heard.

Visit SaveOurNet.ca and share your thoughts with the CRTC using the preformatted submission form. You have until February 23 to share your comments with the commission, so make sure your voice counts!

You can also sign a online petition in support of net neutrality and join the 12,000+ Canadians who have voiced their support for keeping the internet free and open.
